Muistiinpanoja ja lempikyniä // Notes and my favourite pens

Päätin muistikirjainnostukseni johdosta aloittaa aiheeseen liittyvän postaussarjan, jonka tekstit poksahtelevat tänne aina silloin tällöin, noin kerran viikossa ehkä. Tarkoitus on tuottaa päiväkirjailuun liittyviä inspiroivia ja informatiivisia postauksia, joista olisi paitsi iloa, ehkä jollekin jopa hyötyä. Kyse voi olla tarvikkeista, ideoista, materiaaleista tai ihan mistä vaan kategoriaan sopivasta, mitä nyt keksinkään. Aloitan sarjan esittelemällä tämänhetkisen lempikynäni.

Because of my journaling enthusiasm I decided to start a new feature popping here every so often, maybe once a week or so. My goal is to produce journaling-related, inspiring and informative posts that would be not only nice to read but maybe even help someone. They can tell about supplies, ideas, materials or anything related to the topic, whatever I come up with. I'll start the series with introducing my curent favourite pen.

Olen kevään ja kesän aikana muistikirjaillessani kokeillut monenlaisia kyniä, ja tähän mennessä lempparikseni on noussut Staedtler Triplus Fineliner. Se on se kynä, jota kuljetan mukanani kaikkialle ja jota kaipaan, jos se ei ole saatavilla. Yksi kynän hyvistä puolista on, että sitä saa ostettua Suomesta. Olen netissä törmännyt moniin kynäkehuihin ja tahtoisin testailla vaikka minkälaisia kirjoitusvälineitä, mutta niitä ei saa ostettua Suomen kaupoista. Olisi pakko tilata jostain kaukaa ensin, ja jos lopputulos olisikin pettymys, se harmittaisi kaiken odottelun jälkeen vielä enemmän kuin kirjakaupasta mukaan lähtenyt hutiostos.

While journaling during this spring and summer, I've tested several different pens. So far my favourite is Staedtler Triplus Fineliner. It's the pen I carry everywhere with me and miss it if it's not available. One of the advantages is that it can be bought in Finland. I've seen lovely writing supplies I'd like to try all over the internet, but most of them are not sold in Finland. Therefore I would have to purchase them online, and if I didn't like them in the end I would be far more disappointed after all the waiting than I would if I bought something from the bookstore and didn't like it.

Triplus Fineliner -kynät ovat kevyitä, kapeita ja helppokäyttöisiä. Ne ovat jännästi kolmion mallisia ja tuntuvat hyvältä kädessä. Vaikka kynä on kapea, sillä jaksaa kirjoittaa pidempäänkin. Kynät eivät haise pahalta tai leviä paperin läpi sivun toiselle puolelle, (ehkä ärsyttävintä ikinä!) ainakaan normipaksuista paperia käytettäessä. Valmistajan mukaan korkin voi jättää auki jopa vuorokaudeksi ilman että kynä kuivuu käyttökelvottomaksi, mutta itse en ole uskaltanut testata tätä. Värejä on saatavilla kaksikymmentä erilaista, joka ainakin minun tarpeisiini riittää mainiosti.

Triplus Fineliners are light, slim and easy to use. They are triangle-shaped and feel nice in hand. Even though the pen is slim and narrow, it's easy to write even longer texts with it. They don't smell bad or bleed through the paper to the other side of the page (which is so annoying when it happens!) at least not with the normal weight paper. According to Staedtler, you can leave your Fineliner uncapped for 24 hours without the pen drying out, but I haven't dared to test this myself. There are 20 different colors available, and that's enough at least for me.

Triplus- kynät tulevat kätevässä, litteässä muovilaatikossa, jota on helppo kantaa mukana. Itse kuljetan kymmenen kynän laatikkoa laukussani käytännössä kaikkialle, kuvassa se on käytössä junassa. Boksissa kynät pysyvät järjestyksessä, löytyvät helposti laukusta ja ovat aina valmiina käytettäväksi. Laatikosta saa siis plussaa, mutta käyttäisin kyniä vaikkeivat ne boksissa olisikaan.

Triplus -pens come in a handy, flat plastic box which is easy to carry around. I have a box of ten pens always in my bag and I carry it everywhere, in the picture Iim using it in the train. When in the box, pens stay organized, are easy to find from your bag and always ready to use. So the box is a plus, but I would still use these even without it.

Kynän kärki on 0,3 milliä leveä, joten kirjoitusjälki on hienoa ja kapeaa. Jonkun mielestä ehkä vähän liiankin kapeaa, hienoon jälkeen tottuminen vei ainakin minulta aikansa. Värittämiseen kynät eivät sovellu kovin hyvin, sillä samaa aluetta saa tuhertaa kamalan pitkään, mutta siistejä ääriviivoja ja tarkkoja kohtia näillä kyllä saa piirrettyä tosi hyvin. Ja kirjoittamiseenkin kapea kärki sopii hyvin. Triplus-kynistä on olemassa myös millin paksuisella kärjellä varustettu tussiversio, mutta sitä en ole vielä päässyt testaamaan. Paksumpia kyniä en ole vielä Suomesta löytänyt, testikappaleet pitäisi varmaan tilata netistä.

Toinen huono puoli on, että kynät eivät ole vedenkestäviä. (Hyviä, kohtuuhintaisia ja hajuttomia vedenkestäviä kyniä tuntuu muuten olevan mahdoton löytää.) Nämä eivät kuitenkaan leviä kokonaan, vaikka päälle pudottaisi suoraan vettä, vaan teksti pysyy leviävästä irtoväristä huolimatta lukukelpoisena. Kynät eivät myöskään leviä tai suhraa piirtäessä: jotkut kynät tarttuvat heti kädensyrjään ja leviävät tuhnuksi ympäri paperia, mutta näiden kanssa en ole sitä ongelmaa kohdannut.

The tip is only 0,3 mm wide, so the writing is fine and slim. Someone might think it's even too slim, at least for me it took a time before I get used to it. These are not so good f0r colouring things, as you would have to spend lots of time for covering the same spot. Fine outlines and small details are very easy to draw with this pen though, and these are suitable for writing as well. There's also a thicker version of the pen with a 1 mm tip and I guess that would be more suitable for colouring. I haven't used it yet though, as I would have to purchase the pens online to get my hands on them.

The other minus of the pen is that the ink is not permanent (it seems to be extremely hard to find a good, not-smelly, resonably priced AND permanent felt tip pens). These won't fade away totally though even if you drop water directly over your writing. It makes a smudge, but the text will still be readable even when wet. And Triplus Fineliners don't make that much smudge as some other pens might even in normal use: sometimes if you get the ink on your writing hand the whole page will get smudged before you even notice, but with these I've never had that problem.

Staedtler Triplus Fineliner ei myöskään ole kallein testaamani kynälaatu, hinnat ovat lähes samaa luokkaa esim. Stabilon Point 88-kynien kanssa (ne oranssit joita kaikilla on penaaleissaan), joka tuntuvat olevan Suomessa se käytetyin tämäntyyppinen kynä. Pienempi pakkaus Triplus-kyniä maksaa noin kympin ja isompi kaksikymppiä. Ainakin Helsingissä pieniä pakkauksia saa posteista ja molempia kokoja sekä irtokyniä Temperasta. Kyniä löytyy mysö Amazonista, jossa voivat olla vielä vähän halvempia.

Staedtler Triplus Fineliner isn't the most expensive pen I've used, the prices are almost same as with Stabilo's Point 88 -pens that seem to be the most used fiber tip pens in Finland (everyone seems to have them). A smaller pack of Triplus fineliners costs about ten euros and bigger one around twenty euros. If purchased online, for example from Amazon, they might be even cheaper.
